Crazy Little Fishes

Some time ago I was making a CD for the CD swapping group called e*WAX and in my search for music to add, I managed to find this song, that I had been wanting to have for a long time. I have heard it here and there, now and then, but since it's no top hit at the moment I couldn't get the name of it. There are a few songs like that and it itches me when I hear a part of it, but have no idea what it is. Often you cant even ask someone, because you just cant explain the sound, text or anything. You just know you like it whatever it is. But as I was thinking about songs I could use for this CD, just out of the blue; a little part of the lyrics came to me. So I did a search for it and eventually I found the song and downloaded it. I also thought it fitted with the theme I had for the CD I was making, so I added it there.

Anyway, the lyrics that came to me was -"crazy little fishes everywhere" and -"salty air". When I searched for crazy little fishes everywhere I didn't get anything that looked interesting. Then when I tried salty air lyrics I got something. The first link gave me the answer. I clicked it and it showed that a lot of people had misheard the lyrics to this song. But it was the one.

It was At The River by Groove Armada.

The song I downloaded was called Sand Dunes though, but when I later on checked the original album, it said At The River. So I guess I wrote the wrong name for it on the album. Ah. But I was so glad I found it, as I have been wanting it for a long time.

I'm very flexible when it comes to music. I don't think there are one music genre, that I cant find myself to enjoy. I wouldn't buy myself a country and western album, but that doesn't mean that I hate it. I wouldn't either get myself an album by Britney Spears, but that doesn't mean that I dislike pop music. Some of the music Prince have made is considered pop and some of his music are more jazzy. And I have always liked Prince music. So it mostly depends on the songs, not so much the genre, if you ask me.

I choose music after my mood. And for the time of the occasion. There are dinner music, night music, friends music and music for the angry, happy and sad mood. Often I listen to the Blade Runner soundtrack in the evening or when I eat dinner. HIM music is good in the car I imagine. Kylie Minogue is music most of my friends can swallow. While Type O Negative is very good when you feel that gothic white urban spirit coming on. Bjork is music for artists and art lovers. And the Groove Armada song At The River would be very good with ice cream.

If you ask me, it's a bit of a minus if the musicians seem like idiots. You know when you read an interview, or see them on TV and they come off as really dumb. Dumb as in "I think I'm better than everybody else, because I got a hit". Dumb as in "I only do this for the money and the chicks". Dumb as in "I got a strange philosophy I like to sell and that matters more than the music". Dumb as in "It's all about drugs, sex and Rock And Roll". I understand that they do it to sell records, but I often think that some of them would sell even more, if they didn't show their stupidity in the public. If they just wouldn't show themselves out in public at all. When I have seen musicians in ridiculous talkshows, ridiculous interviews, ridiculous videos and ridiculous album covers; I have to admit that it made me not want to listen to their music.

But overall I think I manage to separate the musicians from the music. For example; I'm a big fan of the early music from Michael Jackson, but I'm not a fan of Michael Jackson. He was or maybe still is a great musician in my ears, but I have rarely liked him when I have seen him on TV. Some of his fans reacted negatively when I wrote about him some time ago. They seemed to miss the fact that I actually enjoy his music and have nothing against him as a person. I just think he seems dumb. I have lots of music by musicians I think seems dumb. I try to focus on the music, as I don't want to buy an album, just because I like some people.

It's okay to be wacky and odd, it could be a cool thing. Some people think that Thomas Di Leva is wacky. To me he's a little bit different in an innocently way. Thomas is a hippie and he sings songs about love and flowers. I have liked his music a lot more than I have liked Michael Jackson. Maybe this is because I have never found him to be dumb in interviews. His music would be good at any day, to any mood. I can even listen to him when I'm angry.

Wouldn't it be cool, if a black metal band musician would adopt the hippie love thing, instead of always going for the dark source. And instead of trowing television sets out of hotel rooms, grow yellow tulips in there. Sing angry songs about love and peace and altogether seem like a very angry macho guy. I like it when things aren't so obvious. It would be interesting, if the macho guy didn't seem so macho as he looks. It's nice when a cute girl doesn't sport a cute personality. It would be interesting, if a feminine guy wouldn't be so girly in his personality as he looks. Because I like a bit of originality. A bit of a surprise. A bit of something else.

And I like lyrics I can understand. I often don't understand the lyrics to rap music, so then I usually try to listen to the music instead and just ignore the words. I don't usually buy rap music. I think I only own around five albums, that could be considered rap. But when I hear it some place, it sounds like gossip magazines sometimes. Because they often mention other peoples names in the songs. This means that you have to have heard all the other rap songs, you have to have inside knowledge to know what it's all about. And they got a style you kind of have to enjoy, to be able to take their music videos serious. In one rap video I saw, they were dancing in a church, wearing huge furs, huge jewelry's, huge trousers, huge white sneakers and I think they had huge tigers too. They were all there too be spiritual (not masturbate on the furnitures), in their huge furs. It's funny, but it's not cool and it's not very original.

It's exactly the same with religious music. If you don't know who Jesus is, you can just forget about getting the message.

Some metal bands tend to mostly write "dark puzzling" lyrics. I usually read the lyrics, but I have to admit that I sometimes lose interest in the lyrics, if they have no variation. And as I'm very fond of metal, this means that I do own a lot of metal albums that I listen to, but haven't read the lyrics to. Well, often I have an idea of what they are about, but usually it doesn't move me. It doesn't deeply interest me if I think I know, what the lyrics are about. It's like Cradle Of Filth. Their next album will probably include dark subjects. Fine. It's like the old albums from Cypress Hill, I like some of their old music. I wasn't sure, but I had a feeling that told me, that a lot of their lyrics is all about drugs. Fine. But all this means that I very often just like the sound, to some music and care less about the lyrics.

And I also often tend to think that those musicians are most likely a bit kooky. I mean, if all the songs are about your dark spirits, herb flower, immortal love or Jesus; Well, maybe you need a little vacation. A reality cracker.

But when the lyrics and music appeals to me, it doesn't have to be in a way that I have to personally identify myself with the lyrics. If the lyrics have a point and I can understand it, if it moves me, then it's usually enough for me to like it. I don't necessarily have to agree or feel the same way.

But shouldn't there be a song about crazy little fishes? I was a little bit disappointed, when I saw that the Groove Armada song didn't include those lyrics.
